BISS Musical Charity Event Warmed the Winter Night

04/02/2020 2461

Last December BISS held its annual school production. With the Annex filled with audience, students performed a unique musical. Under the artistic and pedagogical supervision of BISS music teacher, Mr Peter Herrera, students co-created their own story inspired by the school’s philosophy and the IB Learner Profile. The story tells about a blackbird that fell out of the nest and broke his little wing. School children rescued it and as they nursed him back to health, they taught the blackbird the different attributes of the IB Learner profile. As the bird got closer to flying back to its mother, he was also developing his understanding of how to be open-minded, caring, and reflective…

The musical night was designed as a charity event and invitations to the show were sent to several embassies and media outlets. Many guests complimented the show indicating the involvement of students from all grade levels as well as their creativity. All income, including profit from the performance tickets’ sale and on-site fundraising, was donated to Roundabout for the treatment of children with severe illness.

“The Charity Musical Night brought everyone together in a loving atmosphere”, said parents from BISS. Through the diverse cultural activities organized at the school, BISS hopes to bring a sense of “home” to many foreign expats living in Beijing.

BISS-Boutique Culture

As one of the oldest International Schools in Beijing, BISS has been always well-known for its “small and family-like” campus culture. The maximum number of students in each class at BISS is 18. Thanks to this, every individual student is able to enjoy a caring and personalized learning experience.

BISS considers all students and teachers as family and puts emphasis on interpersonal relationships. BISS students are known by their peers, as well as by their teachers and administrators. Because students feel at home, they gain a great sense of trust and know that they can always receive support.

Another advantage of BISS is that as a boutique school it provides students with more opportunities to shine in their way. Through participation in the musical, students were able to develop strong communication and leadership skills. All aspects of the show, including stage design, props, lighting and production were managed by the students under the guidance of their teacher. Even the music and posters were created by BISS students themselves, and everyone who indicated interest had a chance to be involved in one or other way.

BISS - ETU cultural integration

A flea market attended by more than 300 people was held outside the Annex during the event. It was the first charity bazar jointly organized by ETU and BISS Parent-Teacher Associations.

BISS - Pioneer of IB in Beijing

BISS was one of the first international schools in Beijing to be licensed by the Beijing Educational Commission and authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). With its 25-year history, Beijing BISS International School remains committed to deliver high-quality IB education to students of different cultural backgrounds in the years to come. The principles of IB are alive at BISS everyday, and the musical, with its script based on the IB Learner Profile, created by students, is a great example of it!
