MODEL UNITED NATIONS AT BISS ADDRESSING GLOBAL ISSUES

Students are encouraged to participate in debating structures similar to those of the United Nations to address issues relevant to a variety of nations.  At BISS this involvement is encouraged as part of an After School Program.  In this process they research a variety of countries to create meaningful resolutions to present and debate in formal sessions. Our students participate in these congresses at a school (BISSMUN) level, local level (BEIMUN) and international level.

GLOBAL ISSUES NETWORK

BISS conducts a Global Issues Group to address global Issues at a school level. This group is part of the Global Issues Network whose mission: is to help students realize they can make a difference by empowering them to work with their peers at a school, local, national and international level to take action to address global issues. Among these issues are water quality, global warming, environmental degradation, infectious diseases, poverty, illiteracy, depletion of fisheries, peacekeeping, loss of ecosystems and species, the digital divide, gender equity, education for all.

CAREER PROGRAM

BISS conducts a career program for Yr. 9,10 students to help them become more aware of their abilities and their suitability to a wide variety of career options. An aim in this program is to help students to focus their learning on achieving their career goals. BISS also hosts this event as a community & service project with many surrounding schools being invited to attend.

This program has four components:

1. Career Field Trips where students visit several organisations to see and hear about the organisations, their purpose, structures and career options they offer.

2. A Career Fair day offers students an opportunity to hear presenters sharing their career experiences. During the day students also attend workshops and interview personnel to gain insights into careers offered in a variety of organisations.

3. A Work Experience Program (3 days) involves students being hosted in a variety of organisations to gain first hand experience on what it is like to be in a work environment.  These insights are invaluable in helping students make career choices and take greater responsibility for their future.

4. An Interdisciplinary Unit of Work. This program is offered as part of the curriculum. Students undertake activities as part of their subjects. Activities include researching possible career options, the  areas of study and qualifications needed. Students investigate career options related to their various subjects of study, undertake interest and ability inventories  and compile portfolios as evidence of their learning and abilities. They learn how to prepare resumes and present themselves at interviews. They also research successful people in an area of interest to gain insights into these people’s success.

This program is made possible through the generosity of approximately 60 companies who volunteer their time and expertise to work with our students. For this support we are for very grateful.
