Services

Counseling

Students begin to understand the relationship between academic study and the responsibilities of work, home and community. The Counsellor also provides academic follow-up services to ensure the current educational programme is meeting the needs of the individual students.

Medical Clinic

BISS has a full-time doctor on staff to provide on-the-spot medical care and first aid for all students and staff.  We offer medical screening and teach the students about maintaining good health.

Transportation Service

BISS offers chargeable bus services at designated pick-up points before and after school to many parts of Beijing. We require parents to confirm arrangements for transportation needs during registration to ensure a seat on the bus. We have two bus services in the afternoon to correspond with our After School Activities schedule.

IT Infrastructure & Service

BISS is a totally wireless-enabled campus which means that staff and students have access to the Internet from all parts of the School. The whole school's network infrastructure has been recently upgraded to provide more stability and speed to support our one-to-one MacBook (laptop) learning initiative across the Secondary School. All of our classrooms are installed with digital projectors and all learners use mobile technology as well as access online learning environments. Our students are able to keep up to date with the latest information through access to technology right in their classrooms. For more information, please go to our E-Learning section under Curriculum.

F
ood Services

Our catering services are handled by Nutri-Foods. Nutri-Foods provides hot lunches and snacks for students, staff and faculty and also caters for a wide range of functions and meetings at BISS.

The Optimal Learning Centre (OLC)

The OLC is dedicated to delivering an individualized support programme that incorporates the individual learning styles and needs of all students, ranging from those with mild learning difficulties to those in need of enrichment in one or more of their academic classes. It seeks to gain a thorough understanding of the student's individual needs through differentiation in teaching strategies, academic adaptations, observations, team meetings, family interviews, and assessment. Our guiding principles are student-centred, so individual students will receive support and/or instruction from an OLC teacher. This instruction may be delivered on a one-to-one basis, in a small group or in the regular classroom.

To ensure that the students are always striving for their maximum potential with the support of the OLC staff and the community of teachers, family, and peers within the School, each student’s support profile is guided by the following:

-Referral
-Parent Interview
-Consultation with classroom teacher
-Classroom observation
-Assessment
-Identifying learning strengths and needs
-Classroom strategies for differentiation
-On going evaluation and reporting

The services and accommodations may include:

-Assessment
-In class support
-Pre- and re-teaching
-Remediation and reinforcement
-Study skills & time management support
-Goal setting
-1:1 Reading Support
-Curriculum Development/Adaptation
-Technology Adaptations
-Curriculum and assessment adaptation
-Enrichment Programme for Gifted & Talented Students

What are Adapted and Modified Programmes?

An adapted programme:
-retains the learning outcomes of the BISS curriculum
-enables students to meet the learning objectives and participate in classroom activities.

A modified programme:
-provides learning outcomes that differ from the BISS curriculum
-is specifically created to meet the student’s special needs
-utilizes modified criteria for assessment

Tips for Parents:

Good communication between you and our faculty is the most important aspect of providing a complete programme for your child. Parents are encouraged to communicate in any of the following ways:

-Note in homework diary to teacher or OLC support staff
-E-mail
-Phone call
-Parent-teacher conference
-School-Based Team Meeting (includes parents, teachers, administrators and counselor)
It is essential that you reinforce the school’s recommendations by supporting your child at home.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

ESOL is offered to students from Grades 1 - 10 where necessary. This successful and comprehensive programme includes an Intensive English Programme, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Support is provied in Elementary School by withdrawing groups of students and in-class support. In the Secondary School, the ESOL students receive in-class support and extra assistance outside the regular class or attend special ESOL Language Arts and Social Studies classes, depending on their academiic and English language proficiency levels. All BISS teachers are trained in ESOL in the mainstream.
