The Middle Years Programme (Grade 6-10) at Beijing BISS International School provides an age-appropriate and vigorous academic programme for boys and girls aged 11 to 16 - the transition years from childhood to adolescence. BISS provides a secure, caring and disciplined environment to facilitate students' movement from primary to secondary schooling, including a strong transition programme at entry to grade 6.
A significant feature of the course is the emphasis on quality individual learning and the provision of an environment where every student can flourish as a successful learner.
A challenging curriculum, as well as a wide variety of sporting, creative, artistic and musical opportunities, encourages students to question and to be intellectually adventurous and creative within the classroom and in the wider school environment. Within the academic studies, particular emphasis is placed on:
· the development of communication skills;
· an investigative approach to learning;
· the use of initiative to solve problems;
· the application of skills, knowledge and understanding to addressing relevant issues
· the development of individual student’s who have unique needs.
· the ability to develop responsible citizenship, team work and leadership.
· understanding ones own culture while also developing awareness of other cultures.
This challenging, yet accessible curriculum is framed by 8 key learning areas: Language A – ones native language – English, Chinese Japanese, Korean; Language B – learning another language – English, Chinese, Spanish;, Mathematics, Science- Biology, Chemistry, Physics; Humanities – History Geography; Physical Education,; Art – Visual, Theatre, Music; Technology – Computer, Design.
The programme at BISS offers special language options. While we encourage students to maintain their Mother Tongue language we also promote English acquisition as this is the language of instruction. We also realise that some students in addition to maintaining their Mother Tongue Language and English may also wish to learn Chinese while in China. In order to meet this need we offer a recognised Chinese Language program after school for two afternoons per week.
