International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The IB PYP at Beijing BISS International School prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The IB PYP is designed for students aged 3-10. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

Our programme:
- Encourages international-mindedness in our students
- Encourages a positive attitude to learning by engaging students in inquiries and developing their awareness of the process of learning so that they become lifelong learners
- Reflects real life by encouraging learning beyond traditional subjects with meaningful, in-depth inquiries into real issues
- Emphasises the development of the whole student-physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically through the learner profile.

Nature of instruction:
All Elementary students study English, Mathematics, Units of Inquiry (Social Studies, Science, Environment, Arts), Physical Education, Music, Art, Chinese.  The Elementary School is well served with Information Technology - and Personal and Social Studies.  Students have specialist teachers in Music, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language.  When teachers are developing their classroom programme, the aim is to utilize a trans-disciplinary approach - the aim being that we want students to see connections in what we are studying.

Exhibition:

All students in their final year of the PYP participate in the PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school. The Exhibition synthesises the essential elements of the PYP; the learner profiles, attitudes, trans-disciplinary skills, concepts and action that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP and shares this with the whole school community.  Students choose a focus 'issue' that they wish to investigate and they then usually work in small groups to develop a central idea and related inquiry.  They then choose the type of action and presentation they want to complete the process.
